Seven Eleven Jobs in Japan 2026 – Konbini Salary, Visa Rules & Honest Guide

Anúncios

The Japanese convenience store is a national institution. Seven-Eleven Japan, part of Seven & i Holdings, operates the country’s largest network with well over twenty thousand stores, and the konbini does far more than sell snacks: it is a bill payment counter, an ATM location, a parcel drop-off, a ticket machine, a copy shop and a hot food kitchen, open around the clock. Walk into any store in Tokyo, Osaka or Nagoya and a substantial share of the staff behind the counter will be foreign.

That last fact creates the single biggest misunderstanding in this job category, and this guide begins with it honestly, because getting it wrong costs people money. Convenience store counter work is not one of Japan’s designated Specified Skilled Worker fields. The foreign staff you see are almost always working under a different status — most commonly as students with part-time permission, or as dependants, spouses or long-term residents. Understanding that distinction is the difference between a real plan and a scam.

Who Actually Works in a Konbini — And Under What Status

International students. Students on a Student status of residence may work part-time up to 28 hours a week with permission to engage in activity outside their status. This is by far the most common route into konbini work, and it is a genuine one — but the primary purpose must be study, and the hours limit is enforced.

Anúncios

Dependants. Spouses and children of workers in Japan, on a Dependent status, may also apply for part-time permission with a similar hours cap.

Spouses of Japanese nationals, permanent residents and long-term residents. These statuses carry no occupational restriction, so holders may work in retail freely and full-time.

Working holiday participants. Available to nationals of countries with such arrangements with Japan.

What is not available. There is no Specified Skilled Worker field for convenience store or supermarket counter retail. Anyone promising a “Seven-Eleven work visa” from India for a fee is describing something that does not exist.

Where Lawful Full-Time Routes Do Exist in This Ecosystem

The convenience store business is much bigger than the shop floor, and parts of it sit squarely inside designated SSW fields.

Food and beverage manufacturing. The bento boxes, onigiri, sandwiches, salads and desserts on konbini shelves are produced in dedicated chilled food factories running around the clock. Food and beverage manufacturing is one of the sixteen designated SSW fields, and these plants are among the largest employers of foreign workers in Japan.

Food service industry. In-store kitchens, fried food counters and the wider restaurant operations of large retail groups fall within the food service SSW field.

Building cleaning management. Cleaning contracts across retail and commercial premises fall within a designated field.

Logistics and distribution. Convenience store networks depend on multi-temperature distribution centres with several deliveries a day to every store. Warehouse roles are typically accessed through manufacturing-adjacent fields or the training-route system rather than a dedicated retail field.

Automobile transportation. Store delivery driving falls under the field added in 2024, subject to Japanese licensing.

So the honest headline is this: if your goal is Japan and konbini brands are what you know, the realistic full-time lawful route runs through the food factories and distribution network behind the stores, not the counter inside them.

Salary Structure (Indicative)

Role Pay Approx. in INR
Konbini counter staff (part-time, hourly) ¥1,100 – ¥1,400 per hour ₹660 – ₹840 per hour
Konbini night shift (hourly, with premium) ¥1,350 – ¥1,750 per hour ₹810 – ₹1,050 per hour
Chilled food factory operative (monthly) ¥185,000 – ¥250,000 ₹1.11 – ₹1.50 lakh
Food factory line leader (monthly) ¥240,000 – ¥310,000 ₹1.44 – ₹1.86 lakh
Distribution centre operative (monthly) ¥200,000 – ¥270,000 ₹1.20 – ₹1.62 lakh
Store delivery driver (monthly) ¥230,000 – ¥310,000 ₹1.38 – ₹1.86 lakh
Store manager (monthly, Japanese-fluent) ¥260,000 – ¥400,000 ₹1.56 – ₹2.40 lakh

Indicative figures from public sources at roughly ¥1 ≈ ₹0.60, before deductions. Hourly retail pay is anchored to the prefectural minimum wage, which is rising quickly: the FY2026 national guideline is ¥1,176 an hour, up 4.9 per cent, with rates typically effective from October and ranging from ¥1,280 in Tokyo down to ¥1,079 in the lowest prefectures. Late-night work carries a statutory 25 per cent premium, which is why the graveyard shift pays noticeably better.

A student working the permitted 28 hours a week at ¥1,250 an hour earns roughly ¥140,000 a month before tax — useful support for living costs, but nobody should plan a migration around it as a primary income.

Rights, Insurance and Deductions

Full-time employees are enrolled in health insurance, the employees’ pension scheme, employment insurance and employer-funded workers’ accident compensation insurance, with income tax and resident tax deducted — commonly around a fifth of gross pay in total. Part-time workers are enrolled once they cross defined hours and earnings thresholds, and workers’ accident compensation applies to part-timers as well.

Pension contributions are recoverable: the lump-sum withdrawal payment can be claimed after leaving Japan, and the India–Japan Social Security Agreement allows periods to count across both systems.

The Labour Standards Act applies to konbini work exactly as it does to office work: 40 hours a week and 8 a day as standard, 25 per cent overtime premium rising to 50 per cent beyond the monthly threshold, a 25 per cent late-night premium, and paid annual leave from 10 days after six months — pro-rated for part-timers. Japan’s convenience store sector has a documented history of unpaid overtime and unlawful deductions for wasted stock, and workers should know that both are contrary to law.

What the Job Is Actually Like

Konbini work is deceptively demanding. A single shift involves till operation, bill and utility payment processing, parcel handling, hot food preparation and cleaning, restocking from multiple daily deliveries, coffee machine and fryer maintenance, waste sorting to strict rules, and continuous customer service in polite Japanese. The pace during commuter peaks is relentless.

Language is the real barrier: keigo, the formal register of Japanese customer service, is expected, and most stores will not hire below roughly N3 conversational ability. This is another reason the food factories behind the stores are the more accessible route for new arrivals — the Japanese requirement there is the N4-level SSW standard rather than fluent customer-facing speech.

Fraud: The Konbini Visa Scam

This is one of the most common Japan scams sold in India, and it is easy to defeat once you know the rule: there is no Specified Skilled Worker field for convenience store retail. Any offer of a “Seven-Eleven job visa” for a fee is fraudulent on its face.

The genuine routes are: study at a Japanese language school or college and work part-time within the 28-hour limit; or qualify for SSW in food and beverage manufacturing, food service, building cleaning or automobile transportation by passing JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic A2 plus the relevant sector skills examination.

Japanese rules require accepting organisations to confirm workers have paid no unreasonable deposits or signed penalty agreements, and Japan has memoranda of cooperation with sending countries including India to remove malicious intermediaries. Japan is not among the countries requiring Indian emigration clearance under the ECR system, but recruiting agents must be registered with the Ministry of External Affairs and carry legal duties. Verify officially and report fraudsters on cybercrime.gov.in or by calling 1930.

Career Growth

For students, konbini work funds study and builds the Japanese ability that later opens graduate employment under a Specialist in Humanities status — that is its real value, and it is considerable.

For SSW-route workers in the food manufacturing and logistics network behind the stores, the ladder runs from line operative to line leader to shift supervisor, with quality control and food safety qualifications raising the band. Food and beverage manufacturing is among the fields where a longer-term second-tier status may be available, which makes it strategically stronger than fields capped at five years.

Financial Planning

Whether you are a student on hourly pay or a factory worker on a monthly contract, the discipline is identical.

Budget from net income. Establish housing costs precisely — Japanese private rentals involve deposits and key money that catch new arrivals out. Build an emergency fund of three months. Remit through NRE or NRO banking channels rather than informal carriers, and keep records, which strengthen education loan and home loan applications in India.

Hold term life and family health insurance in India alongside Japanese social insurance. Refuse consumer credit. Then write the goals: repayment of any education loan first, then land or a house at home, children’s education funds and SIPs in mutual funds compounding monthly. Claim the pension lump-sum when you leave Japan.

Sample Monthly Budget: Chilled Food Factory Operative

Stock the plan the way you stock the shelf — first in, first out, nothing wasted. An operative earns ¥215,000 gross with night premiums, roughly ¥172,000 after tax and social insurance, with company dormitory accommodation. Fixed lines: rent contribution ¥22,000, food ¥28,000, phone and utilities ¥11,000, personal spending ¥15,000, insurance premiums for family cover in India ¥6,000, language study fund ¥8,000. Remaining: about ¥82,000 — roughly ₹49,200 — allocated on payday: ¥55,000 remitted to India through NRE/NRO channels, ¥14,000 to the emergency fund, ¥13,000 to SIP investments and a property fund at home. A line-leader promotion and N3 Japanese within three years lifts the gross line past ¥280,000 with housing unchanged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a work visa for convenience store jobs in Japan?
No. Convenience store counter retail is not one of the designated Specified Skilled Worker fields. Foreign konbini staff are usually students with part-time permission, dependants, spouses of Japanese nationals, permanent residents or long-term residents.

How many hours can a student work?
Students with permission to engage in activity outside their status may work up to 28 hours a week. Study must remain the primary purpose.

What lawful full-time routes exist in this industry?
Food and beverage manufacturing at the chilled food factories supplying the stores, food service, building cleaning and automobile transportation — all designated SSW fields requiring JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic A2 plus a sector skills examination.

What does konbini work pay?
Hourly rates track the prefectural minimum wage, indicatively ¥1,100–¥1,400 (₹660–₹840) with a statutory 25 per cent late-night premium pushing night shifts higher.

How do I avoid fraud?
Remember that no convenience store work visa exists. Refuse anyone selling one, use only MEA-registered recruiting agents for genuine SSW routes, and report fee demands on cybercrime.gov.in or 1930.

Conclusion

The konbini is the most visible foreign workplace in Japan and the most misunderstood one. Behind the counter sits a student route that is real but limited; behind the stores sits a food manufacturing and logistics network that is one of the largest lawful employers of foreign workers in the country. Choose the honest door: study Japanese to the level the route requires, pass the examinations that cannot be bought, enter with a proper status, save on a written plan, insure your family and claim every yen you have earned — and Japan will repay the discipline far more reliably than any agent ever promised.
