Sunita walked into a Vishal Mega Mart with a one-page CV and no experience. Three days later she was on the floor learning the billing counter. Retail is one of the few sectors that still hires like that. But the counter you approach, and the questions you ask, decide whether you start on ₹11,000 or ₹16,000. Here is how the hiring really works.

What a store job actually involves

A large-format store runs on many small roles working together. There are floor and sales staff who guide shoppers, billing staff on the retail POS systems at the tills, stock and inventory staff who keep shelves full, packing and loading staff, housekeeping, and security.

Behind the scenes sit back-office and cash-room roles, plus goods logistics staff who receive stock from the warehouse and move it onto the floor. The whole building is commercial property, insured and managed to strict standards, which is why even entry roles come with rules, uniforms and training.

It is active, on-your-feet work with a fixed monthly salary. For a first jobber it is one of the quickest ways to get real work experience and a proper pay slip.

Who gets hired on the spot, and who does not

✓

18 or older, basic schooling

10th or 12th is enough for floor, billing and stock roles
✓

Presentable and willing to stand long hours

Retail is physical and customer-facing
✓

Basic phone and billing comfort

Billing staff learn the POS on the job
✗

You do NOT need experience or a degree

This is the line most people miss. Entry retail hires freshers and trains them

What the roles really pay, not the inflated averages

These ranges reflect what entry retail roles advertise in Indian cities. Metro cities pay a little more than smaller towns, and billing and stock roles usually beat pure floor roles.

Ignore any site claiming one fixed “retail salary in India”. Retail pay swings widely by city, role and whether incentives are added. Ask at the interview for the in-hand figure after deductions, not the CTC on paper.
Getting paid and sending money home

Ask on day one whether the store pays into a salary account and deducts EPF and ESIC. A salary account plus a UAN-linked provident fund builds a record that helps you later get a personal loan or a two-wheeler loan. ESIC gives you and your family cashless medical cover at network hospitals, which is a real benefit on a retail wage. Workers who move away for a store job also use the salary account for low-cost transfer of money back home.

Where the stores are hiring right now

Large-format stores are spreading fast beyond the metros into tier-2 and tier-3 towns. That means you often do not need to move to a big city, because a new store may be opening near your home town, which is the cheapest way to take a retail job.

If you do move for work, this is where housing planning matters. A shared room near the store keeps rent and travel low, and many staff share a flat with colleagues to split the deposit and monthly rent.

Where you will live

If a store job means relocating, housing eats the biggest hole in a retail salary. A shared room or a bed in a working-men’s accommodation near the store is far cheaper than a solo flat. In bigger cities, apartments and gated communities on the outskirts cost less than central areas, and sharing a 2 or 3 BHK with colleagues splits rent, deposit and electricity. Pick a place on a direct bus or metro line to the store to keep daily travel cheap.

The hours, and the truth about festival season

Stores open long hours and run in shifts, including evenings and weekends, because that is when shoppers come. Festival and sale periods are the busiest, with long days and few offs, but also the best time for incentives and overtime.

You get a weekly off, usually on a weekday. If you need a routine and steady pay more than fixed weekends, retail fits well.

How people push their retail pay up

The quickest raise comes from moving into billing, then stock control, then team leader and store supervisor. Each step adds a few thousand rupees and more responsibility, and good chains promote from within.

A short computer or retail-management certificate, or basic knowledge of inventory software, marks you out for faster promotion. Skills in goods logistics and stock systems also open warehouse and supply-chain roles that pay more.

Mistakes that cost freshers the job

Mistake 1 — paying a middleman

Retail chains hire directly and free of charge. Anyone asking for money for a store job is a fraud. Walk in yourself instead.

Mistake 2 — no written pay detail

Confirm the in-hand salary, shift and deductions in writing before joining, so there are no surprises on the first pay slip.

Your rights on a retail job

Formal retail employment should come with an offer letter, EPF and ESIC where applicable, weekly off and defined hours under shop and establishment rules. Keep your offer letter, ID card and pay slips safe as proof of employment.

Courses that raise your pay

A short retail-management or computer certificate pays for itself fast in this field. Basic spreadsheet and billing-software skills move you from the floor to billing and cash-room roles. A certificate in inventory or supply-chain basics opens stock-control and warehouse jobs that pay more, and a spoken-English course helps you reach customer-service and supervisor levels. Every small qualification is a step up the retail ladder.

Questions freshers ask before joining

Do I need experience for a store job?

No. Entry retail roles hire freshers with 10th or 12th schooling and train them on the floor and at the billing counter.

How much does a store job pay?

Entry roles roughly pay ₹11,000 to ₹18,000 a month, with billing and stock roles at the higher end and supervisors beyond that. Metro cities pay a little more.

How do I apply?

Walk into the store with a one-page CV and ask for HR, and also apply on the official careers page. Attend the walk-in interview. No agent is needed.

Are there deductions from my salary?

EPF and ESIC are deducted where applicable and are benefits, not losses. Ask for the in-hand figure after deductions at the interview.

What are the working hours?

Stores run in shifts including evenings and weekends, with a weekly off usually on a weekday. Festival seasons are busiest.

Can I grow beyond a floor job?

Yes. Floor to billing to stock control to team leader and store supervisor is a common path, each step adding pay. Chains often promote from within.

Should I pay anyone to get the job?

Never. Retail hiring is direct and free. Any fee for a guaranteed job is a scam.

Is a store job only in big cities?

No. Large-format stores are opening across tier-2 and tier-3 towns, so you can often find one near your home town.
